2009 Shishapangma Expedition

Day Fifty-two: Jeep Ride from Nyalam to Kathmandu; Tom and Jerry’s

Today, we woke up at 5am, and quickly packed up our things. We started the three hour drive to the border city of Zhangmu in the dark, our driver seemingly scared the whole way, driving 60km/hr. When we finally arrived to Zhangmu, we ate breakfast in the Base Camp restaurant, waiting for the border to open. We then headed down to the border station, where we had to go through Chinese customs and immigration again. As usual, they checked all our books very carefully (I’m not sure what they were looking for this time, but they thumbed through all the pages looking for it) and hand checked our bags. An hour later, we were through the border and walked down to the friendship bridge where we officially entered Nepal. We continued down to the immigration office in Kodari where we received our Nepali visas, then headed down to the bus where our equipment was waiting. We piled in and tried our best to be patient as the bus crawled through heavy traffic mainly due to the huge number of vehicles parked on the side of the very narrow road. Four hours later, we arrived to Kathmandu valley and were dropped off at the hotel. We headed over to the Northfield café for a late lunch, refreshed after our first proper shower in two months. In the evening, after dinner at Fire and Ice, we headed over to Sam’s Bar for the obligatory post-expedition Everest beer then after meeting up with some friends, moved on to Tom and Jerry’s.
