2009 Shishapangma Expedition

Day Eleven: Advanced Base Camp; Unpacking and Base Camp Setup

Today, we woke up at 8am to a desolate base camp (we are the first expedition in base camp), and ambled over to the kitchen tent for breakfast. Paola wasn’t feeling her best, as we had gained considerable altitude over a very short amount of time the previous day. We encouraged her to drink and rest all day while we worked. After breakfast, Mario and I helped Gopal set up the mess tent (a big Mountain Hardware Satellite tent; not an easy tent to set up I might add) then worked on constructing the brace for the solar panel setup from the PVC pipe we purchased in Nyalam. We took the next few hours of the day wiring the power and lighting systems and were very happy to see everything was working very well. We were worried that the gel battery that Mario had brought for the Spring Manaslu Expedition might not have fared so well in the hot humid Kathmandu summer without being charged/discharged/conditioned for three months. Thankfully, everything was working at the utmost efficiency and by the end of the day, the battery was fully charged (14.9V) and we had the luxury of lights for our newly placed mess tent for dinner (as did our cook, Gopal). It began snowing in base camp in the evening, and we savored dinner in the warm mess tent, then got an early night’s sleep.
