2009 Shishapangma Expedition

Day One: Arrival in Kathmandu, Nepal

Today, after a grueling eighteen-hour flight from Los Angeles to Bangkok (something I think I’ll never get used to) and a five hour layover in Bangkok followed by another four hours of flying, I arrived to rainy Kathmandu. All my bags made the journey as well to my relief. I met Parajuli outside the terminal after quickly clearing customs, and headed to the Manang Hotel in Paknajol, Thamel (the bustling downtown of Kathmandu). I settled into my room for the first hour, exhausted, and filled out the Chinese Visa form, which is quite detailed for a visa application. When this was finished, I ventured out into the rain and exchanged money, grabbed some snacks from the market, and scoped out the climbing shops looking for a good deal on used snow pickets (aka. Snow Bars (Europe)) and bamboo sticks. I agreed to meet Parajuli tomorrow after Mario Panzeri and his wife arrive so we can all figure out what we need from his end in terms of fuel and yaks and settle our accounts. I had dinner at the Road House and then settled in with a book (“Level 4; Virus Hunters of the CDC”, a fascinating account of the virus hunters of the Center of Disease Control and their confrontation with the dangerous unknown). I must admit, I’m quite worried I will finish this book before I even reach Chinese Base Camp.
