This year, Nicholas Rice will climb as a member of both the “French K2 Expedition 2008” and the  “France Broad Peak Expedition 2008” teams led by Hugues D’Aubarede and Jean Pierre Bouchard respectively. K2 is the second highest mountain in the world and is also called the “Savage Mountain” named for its mortality rate of nearly 28 percent. Fewer than 200 climbers have reached it’s icy summit at a staggering 8611 meters or 28,251 feet. It is seen by most mountaineers as the ultimate challenge, combining technical challenges with inherent dangers due to its steep icy slopes and extreme altitude. Nick will be climbing via the South-Southeast Spur Route. Broad Peak is the 12th highest mountain on Earth at 8,047 meters or 26,400 feet. The first ascent of Broad Peak was made on June 9th, 1957 by an Austrian team. The peak was originally named K3 before it was discovered that the summit was over 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) long when it became known as Broad Peak. Nicholas Rice attempted Broad Peak in 2007, but was forced to turn around at the col at 7,800 meters due to symptoms of cerebral edema. This will be Nick’s fourth consecutive 8000 meter expedition in Pakistan and  seventh 8000 meter expedition.  Nick will be attempting K2 solo utilizing no high altitude porters or supplemental oxygen.

Nicholas Rice will be attempting to climb K2 and Broad Peak solo without supplemental oxygen.  Logistics will be provided by Adventure Tours Pakistan.
