Day Forty: Day Two of Summit Bid; Climb to Camp III

Today, we woke up at 7:00am, melted snow to fill our water bottles, and got on our way to Camp III. I carried around 30kg’s in my pack and therefore was extremely slow. My pace was not helped by the extreme heat of the day, which reached around 40 degrees Celsius. In the mountains, clouds can cause the same effect of an oven, reflecting the solar radiation back and forth, between the snow and the clouds, intensifying the heat. After arriving in Camp III exhausted, Jorge and I dug out our tent platform in the slope and pitched my North Face Mountain 25 tent. I secured it down with the guy lines and we moved in. After melting snow and eating, we dried our gear and tried to relax in the extreme heat of the tents until it finally cooled down. We went to sleep around 5:00pm with the intent of a midnight wake-up for our summit attempt.
