Annapurna Expedition 2010

Day One: Arrival in Kathmandu

After an agonizing 27 hours of travel time on flights and waiting around in desolate airports, as well as significant difficulties with TSA in LAX, I arrived to Kathmandu, Nepal today for the start of my 2010 Spring Annapurna Expedition. Airport security in Los Angeles confiscated my 55aH Gel Battery that I had been so excited to test out in base camp, stripping me of my ability to power my communications and tech equipment on this expedition for the time being. I will spend tomorrow searching around Kathmandu for an alternative power storage solution. After meeting up with Beni from Cho Oyu Trekking (my logistics agency here in Nepal this expedition) at the airport, I headed to my hotel in Thamel (the “downtown” area of Kathmandu) along with my four 32kg duffel bags of equipment and food and checked in. I settled in, the power of course not working throughout the city. spoke with Beni for a bit to sort out the details of my trekking group’s departure for Base Camp and worked out some final details, then headed up to my room for a much deserved shower. I’m supposed to be celebrating my 25th birthday today, however, having only gotten a few hours of sleep in the last 48 hours, I think I’d be better getting an early night.
